One of the challenges to getting organized and reducing clutter is our gift for accumulating things.  Let’s face it, we live in a society of shameless consumerism.  We are encouraged to buy bigger, better, and MORE.  I know I am not the only person who enjoys a teensy endorphin rush when I see the Amazon.com box on my doorstep either.    However, in order to conquer the clutter we MUST overcome our cultural inclinations and physical drive for rewards and employ a little bit of math!  (Don’t worry, it’s not calculus)

The Formula:  Add 1?  Subtract 2.

Examples:

Your sister gives you a sweater for Christmas:   Add 1: sweater to closet, Subtract 2: donate 1 pair of jeans and 1 fluffy scarf to Goodwill.

You find a great silicon spatula on clearance at Macy’s: Add 1: spatula to utensil drawer, Subtract 2: toss 1 cracked wooden spoon and donate 1 unused melon baller

Your daughter wants the newest American Girl doll: Add 1: she adds Samantha to her shelf, Subtract 2: she donates 1 stuffed Sully and 1 Barbie to the church nursery
